Earlier this week, a very sad story from California showed us just how important pet safety really is. More than 100 cats were found inside a U-Haul van parked outside a Taco Bell in Santa Nella, Merced County. A deputy went to check after seeing several cats through the van’s windows. What they found was shocking—106 thin and sick cats inside, along with 28 that had already passed away. The temperature outside was 99°F, and it was likely even hotter inside the van. There was no food or water for the cats. This has made many people ask: how can we keep our pets safe from harm? When we heard this news at EcoPetEssentials, we were extremely saddened by it and decided to help out fellow pet owners make better decisions regarding pet care and safety.
Officials say this case was one of the worst animal cruelty incidents the county has seen in years. The cats ranged in age from just 1 week old to 8 years old. They were found cramped inside the van with matted fur, visible ribs, and signs of severe neglect.
The owner of the van was arrested on 93 counts of animal cruelty. Thankfully, the surviving cats are now at the Merced County Animal Shelter, where they are getting food, water, medical care, and much needed attention from kind humans.
“It’s a heartbreaking situation,” said Deputy Alexandra Britton. “Animals rely on us to meet their most basic needs. No pet should be left to suffer like that.” Britton added that the case was one of the worst animal cruelty incidents Merced County has seen in years. “We’re just thankful these cats are now in our care. Now we can focus on getting them healthy and into loving homes where they’re safe.” Britton shared, “We’re just thankful these animals are now in a place where they can get healthy and find the loving homes they deserve.”
While this situation may seem extreme, pet theft and abuse are sadly not rare. Here are five simple but important tips to help keep your furry friend protected.
Make sure your pet always wears a collar with an ID tag that includes your phone number. It’s one of the fastest ways to get them back if they’re lost or stolen. Even indoor pets should have tags—just in case they slip outside.
Trackers, like pet GPS collars or tags, are becoming more popular for a good reason. They let you follow your pet’s location in real-time on your phone. If someone takes your pet or if they wander off, you’ll know exactly where to find them.
Always keep an eye on your pet in public places. Don’t tie your dog outside a store while you run inside, even for a minute. It’s easy for someone to walk away with them. Also, keep your yard locked and supervise outdoor playtime, especially if you’re not home.
Microchipping is a permanent way to ID your pet. If someone finds your adorable pet and takes them to a vet or shelter, the chip can be scanned to see your contact info. Just make sure your microchip info is always up-to-date.
If you see someone acting strangely around animals—such as trying to lure pets away or keeping too many in bad conditions—report it right away. It’s better to be safe and speak up.
The Taco Bell cat rescue has already sparked a wave of support. Dozens of people across California have reached out to adopt the cats once they’re ready. The animals are currently under a 14-day hold and must be cleared by vets before adoption.
